You’ve probably heard of the “vampire facial”, the facial beauty treatment that uses blood to promote healthy skin. This innovative technique swept the nation after an Instagram post from Kim Kardashian. But did you know that this is actually platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment and it can also be used for hair loss? Read on to find out more about PRP treatment for hair restoration!

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment?

Human blood has red blood cells and also plasma. In the plasma, there is platelets and white blood cells. Both of these organisms promote growth and essentially send signals to the skin cells to fiction. PRP treatment has been used to target a diverse variety of health problems, from arthritis to skincare. Now, research suggests that this treatment can also stimulate hair follicle activity, promoting hair growth!

What happens?

Just like the skincare treatment mentioned above, PRP therapy for hair growth starts with a blood sample. Usually, the blood is taken from the client’s arm and put into a centrifuge. This machine spins the blood to separate the cells from the plasma. This is because there is an abundance of platelets in the plasma, which is perfect for promoting growth. This is then injected into the scalp, at the same skin layer as the hair follicles. The platelets will be injected all around the scalp, at a half-inch spacing from each other. The procedure can take anywhere up to half an hour. There shouldn’t be any pain with the procedure, most of the time the patients have the injections without any numbing beforehand.

Does it work?

Many scientific studies have found that PRP can help to improve hair thickness and hair count. PRP is highly recommended for clients who have early hair loss. It’s good for women or men and is commonly used for people suffering from androgenic alopecia. The treatment is not for everyone so it’s always a good idea to do some thorough research about the clinics that offer this treatment before investing money in them. Look up reviews, client experiences, and information about each company. It is important to find a clinic that is reliable and trustworthy. This way, you can ensure that they do the procedure correctly and up to the best standard.

What will happen after?

Following the procedure, patients may have a small amount of bruising and discomfort. Pain relief medication is recommended if there is any discomfort. After the treatment, the patient should have a warm shower to promote blood flow, however, don’t wash, color, or blow-dry your hair. For about two-days you’ll have to give up on any hairstyling, to allow the scalp time to rest and recuperate from the procedure. The patient can expect results after around three months of regular treatment.

Is it safe?

It’s absolutely safe. There is minimal risk with the procedure and there should only be a minimal amount of bruising or discomfort following the therapy.

What’s the next step?

It’s recommended to do more than one PRP treatment. Anywhere from once a month will have the best chance of effectiveness. After about four months, the client can then reduce it down to every three or six months. However, this all depends on the individual’s response to treatment. The first sign that PRP therapy is working will be a notable decrease in hair coming out. Then, there will a gradual regrowth in problem areas. Keep in mind that PRP should be used alongside other treatments for hair loss and thinning. Talk to a licensed professional about other options to target your specific issue.
