Dysport vs. Botox: What’s the Difference?

Dysport and Botox are both botulinum toxin injections. These types of injections can be used to treat muscle spasms, but more commonly, they are used to treat fine lines and wrinkles in the face. This helps the user to get a younger, more youthful appearance without wrinkles, folds or lines. There are many similarities between these two products, but there are also some differences as well. Learning what the differences are among the two products will help you make a decision as to which product may be ideal for you. Here are a few of the key differences between Dysport and Botox.

Cost

One of the differences between Dysport and Botox is the cost. While both products have a similar per unit cost, the amount of the product that needs to be used to achieve the look you are going for is what can make one product cheaper than the other. As a general rule of thumb, less Dysport has to be used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, making it generally cheaper than Botox. However, this is not always the case. The part of your face that is being treated and your desired results can affect how much of the product needs to be used, which ultimately affects the price. A great doctor can help you determine which is cheaper for you.

Results

Dysport is primarily used for treating glabellar lines. Glabellar lines are the lines in your forehead that are present between and stem from the space between your eyebrows. When you smile, frown or get angry, these lines may become present. On the other hand, Botox is approved for treating glabellar lines, in addition to the other lines on your forehead and crow’s feet, the lines that extend from the edges of your eyes. You need to carefully consider where the lines are that you want to treat in order to decide which product may be a better fit for you.

How Long They Last

Another factor that differs between Dysport and Botox is how long the products last. Once Dysport is injected, the results typically appear rather quickly. You may notice the full effects within a matter of days. It generally takes Botox a little bit longer for the full effect to appear. However, as a general rule of thumb, Botox injections last longer. Dysport injections last about three to four months, whereas Botox lasts about six months. This means that you will need to have the injections less frequently to keep up with the desired results if you go with Botox over Dysport.

Side Effects

Both Dysport and Botox are considered relatively safe with minor injections. Dysport is a tad bit safer than Botox, however, both products carry many of the same side effects, including potential redness and swelling. Both products also carry a slight risk of botulinum toxicity, a potentially serious condition that can cause droopy eyelids, problems breathing and slurring speech. Botox also carries the risk of potential bruising, numbness and a minor risk of paralysis where the injection is injected.
